Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Tiu Kelep Waterfall is one of Lombok’s most spectacular natural attractions, located in the village of Senaru at the foothills of Mount Rinjani. Surrounded by dense tropical rainforest, steep cliffs, and fresh mountain air, the waterfall offers a pristine environment that reflects the raw beauty of northern Lombok.

Renowned for its powerful cascade and dramatic setting, Tiu Kelep is often considered the most beautiful waterfall on the island. The name “Tiu Kelep” is derived from the local Sasak language, loosely meaning “flying pool,” referring to the misty water spray created when the strong current hits the natural basin below.

Natural Setting & Landscape

The waterfall features a multi layered rock formation where water flows down in a wide, forceful curtain. The surrounding cliffs are covered with lush vegetation, moss, and vines, creating a cinematic jungle atmosphere. The natural pool at the base is clear and cool, fed directly by mountain springs from Mount Rinjani.

Due to its location at higher elevation, the temperature around the waterfall is noticeably cooler than the coastal areas of Lombok, making it refreshing even during midday visits.

Trekking Experience

Reaching Tiu Kelep requires a light to moderate trek from Senaru village, typically lasting 30–45 minutes one way. The trail includes:

  • Forest pathways

  • Small river crossings

  • Stone steps

  • Shallow water streams

The route is scenic and shaded by tall trees, making the journey itself part of the experience. Visitors often pass another waterfall, Sindang Gila, before continuing deeper into the forest to reach Tiu Kelep.

Main Activities

1. Light Trekking
The short jungle trek is suitable for travelers with basic fitness levels. It provides a soft adventure experience without requiring technical hiking skills.

2. Swimming
Visitors can swim in the natural pool beneath the waterfall. The water is cold and powerful, so caution is advised when approaching the main cascade. Many travelers enjoy standing near the edge to feel the refreshing mist.

3. Nature Photography
With dramatic cliffs, dense greenery, and strong water flow, Tiu Kelep offers excellent opportunities for landscape and long exposure photography.

Accessibility & Visitor Information

Tiu Kelep is approximately 3–4 hours by car from Senggigi or Mataram. It is commonly included in Mount Rinjani area tours or combined with village and cultural visits in Senaru.

Local guides are available and recommended, especially during rainy season when trails can become slippery. Proper footwear is essential due to rocky and wet terrain.
